Technology Seminar – Ceramic and Electrolytic Capacitors in Power Electronics – Prof. Shmuel Ben-Yaakov – 14-06-23

Capacitors play an important role in the design of power electronics systems. The dominant role is played today by the electrolytic and ceramic capacitors that are found in any power conversion system.  Although known for many years, the technology of power capacitors is still advancing in two major aspects: (1) the introduction of new components and (2) a better understanding of the intricate characteristics of existing power capacitors. This seminar covers the characteristics of ceramic and electrolytic capacitors and their applications in power conversion systems. The first part of the seminar covers the basics aspects, emphasizing less known features and behaviors of these capacitors and provides an understanding of the implications of these characteristics in practical applications. The second part includes some examples of the use of these capacitors, design elements, and how to avoid malfunctions. Finally, ample time is reserved for question and answers on the seminar’s material as well as open discussion on other aspects of power electronics (prepare subjects!)
